In the near future, Earth is becoming increasingly uninhabitable – food supplies are running out, dust storms spread across the planet, and humanity faces extinction. Former NASA pilot Cooper lives on a farm with his children, son Tom and daughter Murph. After mysterious signals lead him to a hidden NASA base, he learns about a daring mission: to travel through a wormhole near Saturn into another galaxy, searching for habitable worlds.
Cooper joins the crew and they set out on the journey. They explore several planets, but none prove suitable for life. The massive black hole Gargantua also causes devastating time dilation – while hours pass for them, decades go by on Earth.
Meanwhile, Murph grows up and discovers that NASA’s original plan to save humanity was impossible. The only hope lies in solving the equation of gravity. With Cooper trapped inside the black hole, he communicates with Murph across time and space, providing the crucial data she needs.
Humanity is eventually saved by building enormous space stations. Cooper is ejected from the black hole and rescued near Saturn. He reunites with his now elderly daughter Murph, who urges him to find Brand – a fellow astronaut who has begun establishing a new colony on a distant planet.
The film ends with Cooper setting out once again into space.
