Open-air cinema - BARBIE
Comedy / Adventure / Fantasy
USA, 2023, 114 min (Alternative cut: 109 min)
The story takes place in a utopian world called Barbie Land, where perfectly happy characters—Barbies and Kens—live. The main protagonist, Barbie (Margot Robbie), enjoys a flawless day in her ideal home. Her boyfriend Ken (Ryan Gosling) is entirely fixated on gaining Barbie’s attention and has no other concerns.
One day, however, Barbie experiences an unexpected shift—she starts having thoughts about death, notices she has flat feet and even cellulite. From “Weird” Barbie (Kate McKinnon), she learns that the only way to resolve her existential crisis is to venture into the real world and find the girl who plays with her, as she might be influencing Barbie’s state of mind.
Barbie sets out on a journey of self-discovery, accompanied by Ken, only to discover that the real world is governed mostly by men—completely unlike the society she comes from. During her time there, she visits the headquarters of Mattel, the company that manufactures Barbie dolls, and meets her “owner” and the owner’s daughter.
Meanwhile, Ken becomes fascinated by the patriarchal structure of the real world and, upon returning to Barbie Land, imposes his own rules, transforming the world into “Kendom.”
When Barbie returns with the mother and daughter, she finds her home drastically changed. She decides to restore Barbie Land to its original state—free, equal, and true to itself.
